SOTD: Half-breed

Yesterday I watched Cher’s Farewell Tour from 2002. I was absolutely amazed and so impressed with her ability to perform. She didn’t just sing songs. It’s really a show in itself. From the wardrobe changes to the video clips that were played between sets, I am so beyond excited to see her this February for my birthday!

I knew most all of the songs except a few. One of them that was new to me is her song Half-Breed. See performance above and lyrics below.

[Verse 1]
My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me

The Indians said I was white by law
The white man always called me
 "Indian Squaw"

[Chorus]
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, 'She's no good' they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

[Verse 2]
We never settled, went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
"Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee"

[Chorus]
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, 'She's no good' they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

[Bridge]
We weren't accepted and I felt ashamed
Nineteen I left them
Tell me, who's to blame?

My life since then has been from man to man
But I can't run away from what I am

[Chorus]
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, 'She's no good' they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born
Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, 'She's no good' they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

I like this song a lot because it’s real. It’s vulnerable. It also follows a narrative. Though it isn’t based on Cher’s own story, it is one that many people can relate to. This sad story of not feeling like you fit in based on nothing you can change…based on your ethnicity alone.

This song has gained a stream of controversy over recent years so I wonder if she will play it on this tour. It’s not my favorite Cher song at all but I just really like the story of it and the performance on the DVD was great.
