Hip-hop/rap today

Today is a decently big day for hip-hop and music in general. We saw the release of three full-length projects from Mac Miller, Travis Scott, and YG.

I would say the most hyped up album is Astroworld by Travis. I have only listened to a few tracks, but it seems definitely on par with the rest of his music catalog. I will be seeing him at Austin City Limits in October and can’t wait to see him perform. I will definitely have to learn these tracks by then. I have time. But this project features Frank Ocean, Drake, Tame Impala, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, The Weeknd, James Blake, Quavo, and even more artists. I think it’s dope that he has all these features but I wonder what he’s trying to cover up with them. I need to give the whole project a listen through, but just my first assumption when I see a track list with that many huge features.

Then we have Stay Dangerous by YG. I am not by any means a big fan, barely a fan at all, of YG. I like his feature on I Don’t with Mariah Carey. Also Big Banks. That’s about all I know of his music for now, but with the hype this project has received, I’ll be sure to check it out. The album features Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Quavo, A$AP Rocky, and more.

Mac Miller’s project, Swimming, includes a track I wrote about previously called Self Care. It has a very mellow vibe to it, and I still really like it. From what I’ve heard of the project so far, it features Mac singing deftly about heartbreak and mental health. He also tries to come to terms with some bad things in his past, like his arrest for DUI and hit and run, by making light of the situation. There of course are some mentions of Ariana Grande, but none that will make headlines. He admits that he was a better person with her than now without her. On Perfecto, he says, “she put me back together when I was out of order.”

Looking forward to dedicating some time to listening to these projects in full for a proper comprehensive review.
