A writer who draws
Austin Kleon is an artist that I really look up to. On his website, he defines himself as "an artist who draws." I'm trying to think back to when I first found him...I believe I was watching a YouTube video of a graphic designer talking about their book collection. And they mentioned a "must read" book by someone named Austin Kleon. So, naturally...I bought the book off Amazon and then followed Mr. Kleon on Twitter and Instagram like any other millennial would.
And his work is AWESOME. This was years ago, when I first found him. He has written some really great books. One being, "Steal Like An Artist."
His books are very direct to the point and easy and FUN to get through. His typography is awesome and engaging, and the content is well worth every penny. I would highly recommend any creative who hasn't already read these, to pick them up. You can click on the above images to link to Amazon.
The books are full of funny yet useful content like:
He also does "Blackout Poetry." Yes, he also has a whole book on it. The book is called..."Newspaper Blackout." An example of one of his poems is below:
I find the Blackout Poetry really chilling...I'm not sure why. Maybe because it's blacked out and it's almost a subconscious message hidden in the original article. And they're very poetic. I haven't seen one that I felt was forced.
His social media accounts are really great as well. Filled with great content. He is definitely worth a follow. Here's a sample tweet he posted recently, a serious topic thrown into a Peanuts comic strip styled blackout poetry:
Link to his Twitter is here.
Please pick up his books if you haven't already read them. They are such quick, yet essential pieces of literature to spark your creativity and inspiration.
